update on people

Chuck and Nadine: In Chicago, well Batavia, with Darryl and Donna and I spoke with them this afternoon.

Joe: I talked to Joe today in the afternoon. He's been pretty busy with the S&WB. Turns out the pumps require water so that water main breaking caused a huge problem.

Vera and the kids: Staying with Eric Maier in Houston. I talked to Eric and they are all OK.

Stephen: The latest reports on Stephen, he called Eric in Houston, is that he is still at the Hyatt. Yes the hotel with all the blown windows. He is doing fine after some pretty harrowing experiences and now just wants something to do. He may try to go check on the Westbank tomorrow if he can and then may head to Houston.

LeSaicherres: They are staying in Houston with the family.

Barattinis: The "upside" of all of this is that we are getting to visit with Tony and Amee and the girls here in Austin. Isabel, our goddaughter, is so cute.

Centannis: They decided to come see Jerry and are now safely in Austin.

Ailie, Bill, and Keri: They are checked into a hotel in Clanton, AL which is about halfway between Montgomery and Birmingham. Chuck talked to her this afternoon. They packed up as much as they could from Waveland.

Lizette and Keith: They were heading to Bogulusa last anyone heard. Haven't heard from them in a while.

Beth: She went to Dallas with Steve and his family.

Please give me any updates you have and leave a comment for new information you have or questions you are trying to get answered.

Calling cell phones with New Orleans area codes doesn't appear to be working. They can call out but we can't call them. It doesn't matter if they are in Illinois or Iowa. It seems the area code makes all the difference.

I have heard no reports from Waveland or Hancock County. On CNN they mentioned they couldn't get any closer than Gulfport.

From random reports on the web, and Jackie's phone in interview, it seems Algiers is mostly OK. Flooding on DeGaulle and certainly trees everywhere, but no water in homes. Many homes have roof damage however. I haven't heard anything specific to English Turn.

To get information we have been watching CNN and The Weather Channel. Nola.com Times Picayunue weblog has been an excellent source of information as has wwl's website. The local station's live feeds, when they are working, are also very good.

I'll post more if I have any further family news or specific our area of town news.

Hey everyone. I am also upset of DiCasel and have absolutely no hope of anything left. Bill and Ailie will need us all to rally behind them on this since this was also their home. Also, what is taking up about 95% of my thought is all of the people who stayed behind. With all of the contacts we have through work, park, kids' schools etc, I most fear finding out we have friends/acquaintances who have stayed behind and were not so lucky as to be in the Hyatt or Hilton or anywhere above one story. Ginger has a few friends that decided to ride out the storm. Luckily, the ones we knew about ahead of time were the ones who live on the WestBank and should be okay. It is those that we have not heard from that I fear for the most. Of course, with the waters now flowing into downtown New Orleans and the reports of gas leaks I am extremely anxious about Stephen since he is still at the Hyatt - no way out.

If anyone hears from Lizette or Ailie, please post it. I am worried about them as well.

Everyone please take care and God bless!

We are here in Batavia. Darryl was able to get thru to HP at Dixie's house. There is no electricity there but another sister Brenda has power. We have not been able to contact David & Cheryl. Last I heard they were in Hammond. Darryl also spoke to Brent in Alexandria. He was able to contact someone in Westwego. No water at that time, just wind damage.
We are in the process of cancelling our flight and keeping our rental van. We will try to contact Don Kraemer in Alexandria and drive there, once we can confirm that there is power there.
Lis, your note made me cry. Memories are very strong. Vera, you are so right, we most likely still have our homes. Ailie and Bill most likely do not. Chuck did speak to Ailie yesterday and Chad Kraemer tody. Ailie would like to go back to Waveland as soon as they will let her in to search for stuff. Her other plans are indefinte.
All we can concentrate on is storm stuff. It is nice, though, to see normal routines around here, carpools, homework, watering plants. A normal life may be a little far away from us now.
Keep in touch.

i'm very happy to know that everyone is safe. most everything else can be replaced.
it also occurs to me that we have a house on the beach becuase a hurricane blew someone else's house away , and now we're in a similar situation. we're all in a little bit of shock, but we will overcome this, rebuild waveland, and celebrate our reslience soon.

Information from Chad Kraemer:

They are going to a cabin in Gatlinburg TN, I have Bill's cell phone number that works and I have the number to the cabin they will be staying. They are going to be there tommorrow sometime and plan on leaving the cabin on the 5th, they do now know where they are going after that. Because they don't know when they will be able, or allowed to go back to the gulf coast.

Nadine, try text messaging David and Cheryl. We cannot call anyone cell phones with the 504 exchange, but are able to text message, which is how I got in touch with my boss. FYI - for those in texas, We are able to see the local WWLTV broadcast by tuning to 310 on Houston/Woodlands digital cable. The Bay St. Louis bridge is gone, the twin spans are gone, highway 11 bridge they think is gone, the entire city of new orleans and most of the surrounding area is under water. They are bringing in underwater search and rescue teams from California. Just heard on the news that they are telling Jeff Parish residents they may be able to return on Monday for a short period of time to gather belongings they can find, but will then be asked to leave again for a month. Ginger heard from someone an hour ago that Algiers residents were being asked to evacuate because of additional levee breaches, but have not been able to confirm that from the news stories. The national guard is being brought in to set up temporary morgues. Maybe it is not a good thing that I can watch WWLTV.... just makes me more anxious. Just, everyone, please pray!!!

Hey I pulled this of the internet post room on WWLTV.com

Posted: Mon Aug 29, 2005 6:26 pm Post subject: I have Algiers info to share

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just spoke to a relative who is a firefighter in Algiers. They rode the hurricane out in the Mary Joseph home on Woodland. Here's a summary of his report of an hour and a half trip out and about, although they were not able to get far.

1. There is about 2 feet of water in the streets of Tall Timbers. Definitely not in some of the houses they were able to check, but not guarenteeing it wasn't in some.
2. Trees are down everywhere. Anything of 3 inches diameter or less was definitely knocked down. DeGaulle is impassable due to fallen trees. Berkely is impassable due to fallen trees. The report was "take Cindy tree damage and multiply by 10".
3. There was NO water in the streets of Bocage or anywhere else they were able to get to around the lower Eton/MacArthur area.
4. Now for the worst part. Of the areas they saw (very limited), 1/4 to 1/3 had significant roof damage or no roofs.

I will post more as I get any new information.

This is such good news. Thank you so much for letting us know.

Once you have had a chance to calm down, let us know the details of how he got home and what he say first hand. I know we would all benefit from the information.

I have some information from Hancock county. At least one of the brothers at St Stainislaus took shelter in the buildings with around 40 of the students. Miraculously, the building there were in stayed standing and they all survived. There were able to call out sometime today and alert someone that they were there. He mentioned however that many of the surrounding buildings were destroyed.

Neighborhood flooding updates

We're posting information on the conditions of New Orleans neighborhoods as fast as we can consolodate it, culling the Town Hall forums for posts. If you have new information, please continue to post it.

8:15 p.m. Posts seem to indicate that conditions haven't changed much, except downtown, where water is up to 5 feet in some areas. The mayor reports that flooding will increase overnight in all areas of the East Bank, as the levee breach at the 17th St. Canal has not been repaired.

5:45 p.m. User at Memorial Medical reports that Uptown from Freret to the River seems to have remained dry, while areas from Freret to Claiborne have "much water"--about 5 feet reported at Claiborne and Magnolia.

4:45 p.m. User reports flooding on Marengo near St. Charles at about 3 feet.

3:15 p.m. Users report that the area near West Jefferson Hospital is dry, as is the 1700 block of N. Turnbull and St. Edwards near Transcontinental.

Walnut Bend and the Algiers area is reported to be doing well, with clean water and gas service.

There are several reports that the Uptown area remains unflooded, particularly around Magazine and Jefferson and Mag. and Webster; Prytania and Napoleon. Similar reports re the Garden District.

Baronne Street downtown is dry.

Port Street in the Marigny was dry this morning.

Canal Blvd. around Harrison is underwater, but a user posts that the water does NOT seem to be rising at all, regardless of what the nat'l. media reports.

A reporter on CNN had this to say about Hancock County. "In Bay St. Louis 80% of the buildings are destroyed. In Waveland 90%-95% of the buildings are destroyed."

My company has been so kind as to give me free week of vacation to go home. If everybody is going to Houston I would like to come, but I want to wait until we can get to waveland or maybe into the west bank to help people get things, just need a date if anybody as any idea when this might be possible. Also to let everybody know, since it seems most cannot get to their homes, if you want to take a vacation you are more than welcome to stay with me, for as long as you can put up with me. I have a few friends that would not putting people up a for a few weeks or so, we also have few pricey hotels, and now gas seems to be cheaper here than in GA. Lots to do here, the beautiful napa vally, SF, some nice golf courses, and a few other nice things to do. And if I get enough people here, I can get the house painted (just kidding)

i was browsing the TP website this am, and found a satellite map of the city. it doesn't include all of algiers, just from the point to shirley drive, but all of that is dry. that makes me even more confident we had no major flooding.
also, had a note from tom arnold re TCC. he says no flooding there, but some broken windows.

We are horrified by what has happened in our home city.

We are waiting for the Louisiana Dickeys in Houston, and as you are well aware, space is available.

Any word on Phil, Kay, and Winkie?

Can anyone tell me why the authorities are not bringing ships and river craft to the docks with supplies and getting people upriver to B.R. and other cities along the Mississippi?
